Desks for Kids

COVID-19 has created many challenges for businesses and families around education and work. While distance learning has allowed for continued education throughout the pandemic, several families have had to make adjustments to enable participation in virtual learning. The adjustment for essential workers and their families is even greater, as working from home simply isn’t an option, making virtual learning even more of a challenge.

Alexandria Offers Virtual PLUS+ Program for Students of Essential Workers

In an effort to ensure every child can participate in virtual school, several Alexandria community and recreation centers are offering child care for K-5th grade students of essential workers and those deemed most vulnerable. Virtual PLUS+ is a full-day program which provides students with a safe, quiet space to complete school assignments and participate in virtual school online. Participants can also take part in physical activities and enjoy nutritional meals.

Eligible students that decide to complete virtual school at home can join one of several after-school programs offered at participating community centers as well. After school, kids receive tutoring, participate in recreational activities, and socialize with peers while wearing masks and social distancing.

Desks for Kids Ensures Every Child Has Their Own Workspace

Having a dedicated space to complete homework and virtual assignments is crucial to the success of students. A workspace allows for mental separation between home and school. It also helps students focus, making them more productive.

Building Momentum is proud to announce that we have partnered with the Carpenters Union, Alexandria City Schools and DC Virginia Tech chapter to launch the Desks for Kids program. Desks for Kids aims to build and deliver 125 desks per week to local community centers and recreation facilities participating in the Virtual PLUS+ program. The program will ensure every child has their own space to complete virtual assignments. Building Momentum plans to expand the Desks for Kids program to provide desks to children from underserved communities who do not have their own workspace at home.

The desks provided through the Desks for Kids program are manufactured on a CNC mill. This computer-controlled wood cutting machine enables fast creation of high-quality pieces. Building Momentum uses this machine to produce the desks quickly out of two pieces of plywood.

Building Momentum Continues to Innovate Through COVID-19

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Building Momentum has been dedicated to developing new ways to combat the virus and help people on the front lines. In addition to the Desks for Kids program, Building Momentum also developed UV-C sanitizing robots, boxes, and grills and produced and distributed reusable face masks. Our efforts were recently featured on the Amazon Prime Video docuseries, Regular Heroes and in a  TV spot on WJLA ABC7.

Building Momentum continues to innovate and teach others how to utilize technology to solve problems in both their personal and professional lives. We strive to help our community and schools by providing the tools needed for safe and effective learning. Our Desks for Kids program is just one example of our commitment to our community.
