Innovation Boot Camp in Okinawa!

Technology training doesn’t get any more visceral and real than it does when Building Momentum shows up in Okinawa for two weeks of our Innovation Boot Camp(IBC)! When we arrived, we threw sixteen active-duty marines right into the deep end of the pool with a five day intensive IBC where they learned how to CAD (Computer Aided Design), 3D print, basic robotics, sensors and more!

Senior Associate, Akshta Suresh, teaches the concepts of electricity in week one of Building Momentum’s Innovation Boot Camp. Akshta has a passion for teaching and is currently developing curriculum for software defined radios.

After the first week, 8 students were selected to participate in a 5 day self-directed force-on-force capstone activity. Students were assigned to either team Alpha or Omega. Two Building Momentum teammates were embedded in each team.  Students were briefed on the objective to use solar power to create 3D prints of a mission critical Javelin part while monitoring the movements and position of the opposing team. The team that could print the most parts while disabling the capabilities of their opponents (disrupting solar power or sabotaging 3D printing) won the exercise.

Each team was given a budget of $500 USD to spend on the economy to support this mission. Students learned how to build, configure and pilot drones (quadcopters) and how to modify a ground vehicles with thermal, infrared and standard first-person-view cameras.
