A Day as a Build Mo Drone

By Cecily Wynne – Senior Associate of Education

If you have read our last blog “The Garden by Building Momentum,” you have a better understanding of exactly what Building Momentum is and what we are capable of. If you come in for a building tour, however, it can be difficult to describe all and exactly what we do here. Let me walk you through a typical Friday at The Garden. A “fly on the wall” of sorts – or, to make it more tech-savvy, a day as a drone. Let’s start in our lobby at The Garden.

7:30 a.m. – We fly through the front door along with our front desk associate starting the day by a walk through the building turning on lights and getting (the very necessary) coffee going.

8:00 a.m. – By now, we have been hanging out at the front desk watching 40 people enter through the lobby for a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Summit in the Naval X space in The Garden.

8:30 a.m. – Our Chief Operations Officer, Tom, walks in with our Director of Doggos, Bear, and make their way upstairs to staff offices. Dogs are more fun than watching people come in, so we follow them upstairs.

9:20 a.m. – After playing with the Director of Doggos, we zoom into the upstairs bullpen where managers and associates are heads down at their desks answering emails before the morning scrum.

9:45 a.m. – After the morning meeting, we fly down the back stairwell into our workshop to see several associates walking trashcans down to our dumpsters. It’s an all-hands event and our team gets a little fresh air! Unfortunately, The Garden is within restricted airspace, so we can't fly outside with the team.

11:00 a.m. – After a battery recharge, we head to the classroom where a group of middle school students are learning how to solder DC motors and a switch in series to create mini drag racers at one of Build Mo’s field trips!

12:00 p.m. – In The Garden event space, a Lunch and Learn on sustainability for Building Momentum staff is taking place, hosted by an associate. We will buzz around the back and learn all we can about sustainability!

1:30 p.m. – The lunch and learn clears out, and the middle schoolers are cleared to come into the event space. For the next 30 minutes, we hover above the racetrack where the kids race down the room with their newly made drag racers!

2:00 p.m. – Suddenly, the garage door to the parking lot rolls up hitting us with a gust of wind and sending us teetering to the bar area. The kids exit the building as a private event client rolls in with decorations for a birthday party taking place later that evening.

3:00 p.m. – To get out of decorating, we make our way into the shop and up to the laser loft to see a private laser cutting class being taught by an associate trainer. From the window, we see people gathering outside the building and we exit through a hole in the wall to end up…

4:00 p.m. – Back at the front desk where the folks from the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Summit are leaving through the front door. We hang out with the 3D prints at the front desk until…

5:00 p.m. – Most Building Momentum employees say goodbye and head home after a long day. However, for some, the day is just beginning! We follow these incoming employees to...

5:30 p.m. – The workshop where the private laser cutting class is finishing as more Building Momentum staff come in and start setting up the welding area for a Wine and Welding starting at 7 p.m.

6:00 p.m. – A party cracker signals the arrival of guests in the event space for the birthday party. But we stick in the workshop space for the evening to not disturb the party.

7:00 p.m. – Guests for the Wine and Welding arrive in The Garden workshop to walk around the space and begin snacking! Naturally, we join in and hop table to table to say hello.

10:00 p.m. – Wine and Welding is complete, so we say goodbye to our new welders! The instructors debrief and clean up after the activity.

11:30 p.m. – The birthday party is wrapped up, and the final guests are out the door. Now the cleanup begins!

12:30 a.m. – Our event staff are locking and leaving the building and we settle into our charger for the next day’s work!

We are capable of so much in our home called The Garden, and this was only one day! Each day with Building Momentum and at The Garden is uniquely packed with all sorts of happenings. We hope one of our trainers in the future will take you to a training session with a different day as a drone!
